Now:
The team were awarded for their outstanding construction work within local habitats! The team went above and beyond to bring people and nature closer together and protect the wildlife at The Riverside Reserve from pollution.
The newspaper report had the team’s photo along with other photos – 2 before and 6 after photos of the Lake. The after photos showed the wildlife that can be seen from the new visitor hides!
Before:
1) When the team went to work on the hide, they noticed the river water was becoming cloudy and muddy. There seemed to be debris floating on it. Ranger Willow explained that the situation was getting worse. Too much mud and farm run‑off entering the water, could: make it hard for fish and insects to breathe, scare away otters and stop kingfishers from seeing their prey. We zoomed out and saw a stream feeding into the river. The water was murky here too. Where the water became cloudy, we discovered a broken wall on the edge of a farm. Heavy rain seemed to have washed the wall and waste from the farm into the stream.
2) The team worked to repair the wall and make it stable again to prevent further damage.
3) Great news – the water began to clear again. Using their DT skills they planned and made a platform to be used as a base for the hides.
4) They were paid for both jobs and after bills came out, assessed whether or not they had enough money to achieve their savings goal. If not, what could they have done better next time? If they could, what did they do well? We had some lovely insightful conversations about this!
Well done team!
