How can parents support Phonics at home?

Phonics in Reception

At Woodrow First School we follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds phonics scheme. Each day the children have a phonics session which begins with phase 2 and progresses to phase 4 by the end of the year. Phonics sessions enable the children to learn letter sounds and practice oral blending and segmenting. Phonics also enables the children to learn power words such as I, no, go, to, into and the.  Developing their phonics knowledge and practising their skills enables the children to become confident and fluent readers.

Our Phonics sessions are supported by reading books which are matched to each children phonics level. See the reading area of our page for more information. We also run a range of different groups to develop knowledge and confidence and to ensure any gaps are filled as quickly as possible.

We had a great turn out for our phonics workshops.  Adults and children enjoyed working together; practicing phonemes, building words and reading some of our wonderful new books.

If you were unable to attend, please take a look at the information below.  It explains all about our Little Wandle phonic programme and there are also some tips for you to help your child.

How can you help?

It is really important that you support your child to pronounce the sounds correctly.  Watch the videos below so that you know the correct way to say the phonemes.
