Spring Term 2025-2026

The zoo keepers have had a challenging week when they discovered that the lion had been given chocolate and crisps at feeding time! The children learnt about the importance of eating the correct food and talked about how to help the lion. The team of zoo keepers took photographs with their cameras to gather evidence of how the lion was affected by the wrong food!

They decided to call the vet. The vet arrived with a special bag and the children learnt about a stethoscope, thermometer, bandages and medicines. The lion was cared for by the vet and the lion began to growl! He slowly stood up and crawled away! The zoo keepers now had to remember to feed the animals the correct food.

The children have enjoyed exploring the vets in class with a variety of other animals and have had stories at carpet time about vets. We are very proud of how the children have developed their story telling skills, imagination and drama in this Mantle story. Well done nursery. ๐Ÿ˜€

The nursery children have been very busy since returning after half term. We began with learning about Chinese New Year. The children enjoyed stories and watching videos of a family preparing for this celebration. We cleaned the house in nursery, opened a Chinese restaurant, made Chinese fans and tasted spring rolls and prawn crackers.

In Mantle the children continued their work as the zoo keepers. They made marks on paper to create zoo posters and maps to help the visitors find their way around the zoo. Tickets were sold in the ticket office and the children loved creating a safari jeep to travel around in. It has been lovely listening to the children as they have used the vocabulary learnt in Mantle in their play.

Outside the children are enjoying water play, sand play and the bikes. We are very proud of the way the children are caring and sharing with each other. Well done Nursery.

The Zoo Keepers have had two new deliveries to the zoo recently and have been very busy with their responsibilities. The lions and parrots have now arrived and the children have been learning about two new habitats. The rainforest and Africa.

The lions required a hot, dry place to live at the zoo and the parrots needed tall trees, water,  fruits and seeds to eat. The children have engaged in a variety of activities in class to support their knowledge about these habitats and have enjoyed learning about new information. We have painted landscapes, made lions and parrots as well as watching videos and reading stories about these new places in the world.

The Zoo Keepers  had to make sure we did not over feed the parrots and we linked this learning to the children’s maths work. We counted out the correct number of seeds and fruits so the parrots did not get too full!

We are very proud of all the children in nursery and all their hard work looking after the animals in the zoo. ๐Ÿ˜€

The Zookeepers have been busy setting up the different habitats that each new animal needs in our zoo. This week we had the delivery of a Triggerfish. Triggerfish have big teeth, eat starfish and sea urchins and live in a warm ocean. It was important we got this right so the fish would survive at the zoo. The children have worked hard creating the ocean with mixed media, learning key facts and vocabulary about the Triggerfish and working in the zoo office, taking details about our next delivery. I wonder what will arrive at the zoo next?

We have had a lovely time over the last few weeks welcoming our new children to nursery and also seeing our nursery children from last term. The children have been settling back into the routines of nursery and have enjoyed building relationships with their new friends. There has been a lot of play involving sharing and turn taking and the children have enjoyed experiencing new learning together.

In class the children have enjoyed the story Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell. We have started Mantle this week and the team received a delivery. It was a box and inside we discovered a polar bear. We watched a video clip of a real life polar bear and talked about the habitat that they live in. We developed and used vocabulary such as fur, claws, teeth and paws. The team learnt about what polar bears eat and they were surprised they would eat seals, fish and eggs!  The team created a cold, icy, dangerous place for the polar bear. Together with adults they created stories through play.

The activities in class have linked to the children’s learning about winter and polar bears. They have enjoyed ice exploration, snow and arctic animal play, drawing and creating polar bears and winter stories at carpet time.

We can’t wait to see what new delivery the team will receive next week!
