Firefighters (Spring 2025)

We have found a pair of big, heavy boots and a yellow helmet in the classroom. Who do they belong to?

We decided that they belonged to a firefighter.  We did a Role on the Wall of a firefighter to find out what we already knew about firefighters.  We knew all about some of their special uniform and knew lots about their equipment.  We knew that they used a hose, ladders and fire engines to help them put out fires.  We were thinking about what other things they can do to help us?

We thought more about the special uniform that firefighters wear.  We found out that their boots have a toe made of steel, to protect their feet from things falling on them.  We also found out that their clothes are made of fire resistant material, so that it cannot catch on fire.  We had a go at drawing our own firefighter pictures.

We listened to an emergency phone call between a poor old lady and the emergency call responder. Her house was on fire! The call responder plotted it on the map and we planned out the quickest route to the emergency. We needed to dispatch immediately! We hurried outside to prepare the fire engines and equipment.

When we reached the lady she was stood on the grass outside her house and looked very worried! Some of the cadets moved her to safety whilst the other members of the team moved in. We put the fire out and made sure to follow all fire safety procedures!

We interviewed the old lady and asked her some important questions: How did the fire start? How are you feeling? Where are you going to live now? The children considered the feelings of the old lady and wrote these in thought bubbles.

The emergency dispatcher received a call from the worried owner of a black and white cat. It had got stuck in a tree and they were worried because it was hanging onto one small branch! The dispatcher plotted the emergency on the map, planned the quickest route called the firefighters straight away! The children drew all of the necessary equipment needed and stuck these to a picture of the cat in the tree. They had brilliant ideas such as a ladder, rope, basket, cat food and blankets. The firefighters were ready to set off.

Oh no, disaster! The firefighters arrived at the emergency but the cat got scared for all of the noise and climbed higher and deeper into the tree and the ladder isn't long enough! The team needed to find a way to lure the cat back down and need to act quickly! What do cat's like to do? What are some things that might tempt them to come back down? The team mind mapped different ideas; food, milk, mouse toys and blankets were a few. We really hope these work so we can bring the poor cat to safety...

Success! The team made soft and quiet sounds from different instruments and lured the cat down from the high branch... but it looks hurt! Who do we need to call? A vet!

The children planned what we would say on the phone call to the vet, by sequencing a story board of the events.

The team phone called the vets and she said they must be seen right away! She performed lots of checks on the cat and bandaged her up. What a relief that she is ok!

The team received a letter of thanks from the owner of the cat, he didn’t know what he would have done without them… well done team!
