This week we have been thinking about where and how the fire started in the 'Great fire of London'.' We have been making salt dough bread and cakes so we can set up a bakery in the role play area.
The team have also been comparing firefighting equipment from 1666 to present day and we have discussed how much harder it would have been to put out the fire with only carts, leather buckets, squirters and hooks. No wonder the great fire of London lasted for four days!
We have also been creating vehicles out of mobilo and buildings out of magnetic shapes. The children have really thought about what they wanted to build and have showed amazing creativity.
In maths we have been building 9 and 10. We have looked at different numbered dots and have developed a deeper understanding of what two numbers go together to make 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.
In Literacy we have looked at the houses in 1666 and have written about the materials they were made of as well as the style of the buildings.
On Thursday it was 'World Book Day'. The children really enjoyed bringing their soft toys into school and we had a lovely treat - Year 4 came down to ready with us! It was such a lovely morning and so wonderful for our younger and older children to share some time together.

This week we have created a map of London in 1666. We looked at Pudding Lane and saw how close the building were and the style of buildings. We used rulers to draw the beams on the houses and drew lattice windows. Once we had all finished we took the map into the blue room and sang 'London's Burning'. Half of us were the firefighters and the other half were the people calling for help!
The team were so proud of their hard work!
Take a look at out fantastic map!

As well as all the handwriting, clip board challenge and other exciting provision we have, this week has been all about love and hearts. The children have thought about who they love and have written some sentences about the important people in their lives.
We also looked at the artist Kandinsky and his amazing abstract art using colorful shapes. Each children created a heart using watercolours and then we arrange them altogether to create one big piece of art. It looks fantastic!
In Mantle and Literacy we have started to find out all about the 'Great Fire of London'. We watched how the fire started and how quickly it spread. They wrote about the fire in Literacy and we have met someone very important in Mantle. The children were most concerned and wanted to help put out the fire. Look below in the Mantle section to see who the important person was!
Mantle
Did you know that we had a King? He is called King Charles III, but there was another King Charles. He was King in 1666. He was King Charles II. The team compared pictures of both the kings and look at how different they looked. The clothes were so different back in 1666 and King Charles II had really long hair!
At the beginning of the week we made King Charles II come to life by dressing a mannequin in lots of material, a cape, a crown and some jewels. We then added labels and named him.
Later on in the week the team travelled back in time to 1666 as they were asked to come and meet an important person. It was King Charles II! Before we met him we had to discuss some rules about how we act when we are in the Kings presence:
bow when we walk in
don’t speak unless he asks us a question.
stand very still and quietly.
The team did an amazing job and took their roles very seriously.
The kind asked if we could help put the fire out as he had heard that we were a team of firefighters and that we had put out fires before.
We accepted. Now all we had to do was prepare for the task at hand.
Outside
What a lovely dry week we have had. Hopefully Spring is on it's way!
The children have been able to get outside everyday this week. They have been problem solving, communicating with peers, creating and building resilience.
Take a look at what we have been doing!

The Year of the Horse.
As it is Chinese New Year in half term we have been set up provision for the children to learn all about it. We have made Chinese lantern, created number symbols with playdough, made blossom trees, Chinese snakes with dabbers to create repeated pattens and set up a Chinese restaurant with role play food and utensils.
In Literacy we have been learning about a Dentist and what they do to help us. The children loved looking at the big set of teeth and cleaning them with toothbrushes. Each child was then given their own toothbrush and toothpaste to take home.
In Maths we have been growing 6, 7 and 8. The children had to find groups of 6, 7, and 8 and say how many ther were altogether.
Outdoor
What terrible weather we have ben having!. It has rained all week! But that doesn't stop us from having fun outside.
We put on wellies and had umbrellas so that we could splash in the puddles and get some fresh air.

This week we have been really creative!
Paining pictures of fire engines, celebrating our firefighting work through pictures and creating a class book to show the roles and jobs for the team.
In Literacy we have shared ideas about how our teacher helps us and have used the phoneme mats to help us write independently.
In Maths we have been growing 6, 7 and 8. We have explored these numbers by making pairs and looking at odd and even. We have also used numicon to help us learn about doubling. We have notices doubles in pictures, made doubles using our fingers and used numicon to make doubles up to 8.
The provision reflects our Mantle team, Woodrow Firefighters, and the children are motivated by our story. Take a look at what else we have been doing this week.

This week we have been putting out fires, growing numbers 6, 7, 8 and thinking about how the police help us. We have made flames out of tissue paper and laminating pouches. The children loved watching their work go through the laminator.
As the children have now been taught all phase 2 and 3 graphemes they have been developing their independent writing. They have written CVC words to match a picture e.g. cat, sun and have written a short sentence to explain a picture they have drawn.
The team have been very busy inside the classroom and outside.
Take a look at all their wonderful work.
Mantle
The Woodrow Firefighters have been creating their own maps using the houses that they made and some road tracks. The team then placed some paper fire on top of the buildings, then using the small world people and fire engine acted out a call out.
At the end of the week the team drew all their emergency call outs onto a big map. Everyone contributed to the story map, adding houses, fire engines, people and firefighters.
Outdoor
Outside has been very busy again this week. The children have been working on co-operative play and creativity.
To enhance the provision outside there have been large hoops and 5 beanbags for throwing practice. The children counted the beanbags first, so they knew how many they were throwing. Then they had to count how many beanbags landed in the hoop and how many didn't. We said the sentence stem to match:
3 in the hoop and 2 out of the hoop. 3 and 2 make 5!
We also had some Mantle based provision: Flame cup stack. The children had to throw a small ball at the cups and then identify what numbers they had knocked down.

Provision.
There has been lots going on this week. Exploring the provision, independently selecting resources to develop skills as well as team building and co-operative play. Here are a few examples!
This week the children have been developing their skills as a firefighter. There has been a fire in the small world house, so the team have set to work role playing to put the fire out. We have been really creative printing snow flakes using a chocolate tub, blue paint and a cotton bud to draw our design before printing on some paper. To develop their fine motor skills we have used elastic bands to wrap around wooden blocks, traced around a fire engine and spray bottles outside to put out the fire in the tuff trays.
We have also been developing our number bonds to five, singing 'Five Little Speckled Frogs' and moving the frogs from the log into the pond. The children are beginning to recite the stem sentence each time a frog lands in the pond:

The team are almost ready for their first call out, but we needed a map to help us find the quickest route to get to the fire.
So, we made a map of Woodrow! We have the school, hospital, Tesco's, fire station and then the children added houses that they designed.
What a fantastic map!
Well done team!
WB: 12.01.26 - Provision
This week we have been really busy! The children have enjoyed exploring all the enhanced provision. Some of the provision we've had is; red playdough and firefighter pictures to colour to build fine motor skills as well as drawing fire pictures using the paint programe on the Ipads.
We have also been learning all about the role of a firefighter, what equipment they need and describing their qualities. The equipment and clothing is very important as it keeps a firefighters protected and safe. The children have been practicing their handwriting by writing a list of things related to firefighting and have also described the qualities of a firefighter in Literacy.
To be a firefighter you need to be:
In maths we have been looking at number bonds to five and have used a whole-part-part to explore this. We have also used the numbers on flames to match the correct numicon piece.
The children have also made fire pictures using forks and paint. We will be using the paintings for a display, so watch this space!
Outdoor provision.
The children have really go stuck in to the provision outside this week. We have had:
The scooters and ropes out to pull our friend around the playground.
Large bricks - making fire engines.
Practice for our Firefighter training - Buckets of water to transport from one location to another.
Mantle: Friday 16.01.26
We are a team of Firefighter. We are called 'Woodrow Firefighters!'
The children had to complete their fire training today, before they can go out on a call. They had to complete four tasks:
Get dressed in 30 seconds.
Step through the ladder safely.
Carry the buckets of water following a pathway.
Unwind the hose and lay it straight.
All the team passed their training! The new recruits are now awaiting their first call.
WC 5th January 2025. Welcome back everyone! this week (although shorter than usual!) has been a busy one! We have talked lots about how we celebrated Christmas and what we did over the school holiday and we drew and wrote about our favorite present or toy at home. We have been working together to build very impressive buildings from the magnetic blocks and wooden bricks. We have been looking at different people who help us in our community and finding out what they do, with a particular focus on firefighters. Some of the children have been putting their handwriting into pactice with the clipboard this week, finding and writing the names of the people who help us. We have even had some frosty mornings outside, exploring ice and a few flakes of snow!
