The children were introduced to someone very important; they were wearing a crown and robe and had a guard on either side. Who could they be? The children discussed their ideas and decided that it must be the king! The children already knew some things; that the main role of the king is to protect and look after the country, that he is a very important man and that he wears gold and jewels. The children explored the different places the kings face is found- on stamps, bank notes and coins- and a picture of the king at his coronation! They then used this knowledge to label a picture of King Charles III
Next, the children learnt all about the kings coronation and watched a video of his crowning. They discussed the feelings and thoughts he might have been having at that moment; nervous, anxious, proud, excited, happy, etc. The children then wrote down the thoughts of the king in thought bubbles.
After, the children focused on the kings crown and used descriptive words to write a sentence and design their own crowns!
Next, the children explored the inside and outside of Buckingham Palace and had lots of discussions about who the king would have working for him and their different roles within the castle! The children found out that the King moves between lots of different castles and doesn't have one home like we do.
The children collected ideas about how the king stays safe in the castle and when out on royal appointments. He needs security guards of course! The team were introduced as the kings security guards and they created a role on the wall; labelling all of the equipment a security guard would need.
They considered how the king would need some privacy and so they couldn't be around him all the time. They needed to create security cameras! The team designed their own security cameras to place around the palace. It was improtant that they ran 24/7 to keep an eye out for anything suspicious....
The king was just about to fall into a deep sleep in his big, comfy bed when suddenly... an alarm sounded! It was coming from the royal dining room!
The team quickly discussed their plan of action. Some of the team would need to stay with the king to ensure his safety, whilst the others would need to send out a warning on the walkie talkies, to ensure every person in the castle knew there may be danger.
The children independently wrote messages such as 'Quick! Call the police!' and 'There is a man in the castle!' They did a brilliant job with this, hopefully the message is shared around the castle...
The team quietly moved to the dining room and discovered a trail of muddy footprints... and crumpled up note! The team worked together to read the note, could it be a clue?
"To King Charles
I am a big fan of the royal family! I would love to talk to you, but it's so hard to get to you."
They considered that the intruder wasn't a danger, but he just wanted to get the chance to see the king!
The team reported to the king and he ordered them to record all the places the intruder is seen. The team worked together to make a map of the castle and mark the places that movement was spotted.
The team used their maps to locate the most recent footage of the intruder, the garden! They slowly creeped outside... they could see a figure in the distance in amongst the trees... they followed slowly...
They were greeted by a very confused looking man, who asked them where the king was. The team discussed how they should respond to him and decided that it was not safe to let him near the king; he is a very busy man and it is our job to protect him! Instead, the team decided to make him something to remember him by... a portrait!
Well done team!
