The Scuba Squad
The scuba squad are a team of commercial divers on the Cornish coast of Pentreath beach. They use their skills for both scientific research and pleasure, hosting open days and teaching members of the public about the beach.
Miss Lettice began by displaying an image on the board. We discussed what we could see and discovered this place was Pentreath beach. We found out that this is where our mantle would be based. We could see sea, sand and land. Miss Lettice then told us about something called a “Coastline”. This is where the land meets the sea.
As a class, we decided that before we could begin our story, we needed to represent the beach. We worked in two teams to create the ocean and sand. We then represented me labelled the coastline together as a class.
The scuba squad hosted an open day on the beach, inviting families to come and explore their field of work and dive with them. Out of the story we created bunting to represent this and then posted a photo on social media. The day was such a success!
Later on, we received a message from NASA, asking for help to explore the sea further. They asked us to share our skills with them. We thought they meant discuss how we enjoy the beach, so got to work showing them the many things they could do at Pentreath. Out of story we discussed
We then used drama to represent these and then took a photograph to send back to NASA.
NASA did not want to know of the different things they could do at the beach, they wanted us to share our skills.
Out of story, we thought about how we could represent this and decided to create goggles with a view of what we would see under water. We drew and coloured various sea creatures, painted a laminating sheet and placed a goggles outline and our creature inside. We then sent this to NASA. They replied with a thumbs up, and asked to meet us on the coastline the next day.
